Hurricane Sandy left my home and most of lower Manhattan without power for over a week in 2012. At ten years old I had never been encompassed in total darkness and it had a massive effect on me. The other half of my title, Snowy, is in reference to the time of year when more people are starting to feel effects from Seasonal Affective Disorder due to change in weather and the time the sun sets. The piece centers around saddness due to external factors, especially light.
The sole source of light was important for this work because it was supposed to mirror a beacon of light that draws in the viewer to exist in this otherwise empty and dreary space. It also was to invite a feeling of yearning to my viewer to be outdoors or in a lit up space.
