They’re a Brick illustrates the energy drain that comes from being in an emotionally taxing relationship. The composition uses two glass segments with opposing features to express the feeling of being weighed down by one another. The first element in this work is a solid, glass spherical object containing visible internal cracks from stress caused in the making process. This sits on top of the other feature in the piece, an 11ft. long neon tube on a downward slope from 6ft. high on the wall to the floor where its base is being visually weighed down by the cracked glass. This atypical installation and scale instills anxiety when viewing it live because of the tension in this minimally supported thin glass tube.
The tube is filled with neon, illuminating a bright and warning red light. The bottom of the tube is blacked out with paint but words have been scratched in and phrases can be read on either side of the object sitting atop the base. Some of the phrases included are; “Do you love me?,” “Please help me,” and “I love you”. These phrases are repeated again and again to convey desperation. Written on the center of this section of the tube is the phrase, “I’ll kill myself if you leave me”. The cracks in the spherical glass object obscure the words, but they are still legible.
